A figure-ground shift is proposed in which the hermeneutical theory of Paul Ricoeur becomes the ground and homiletics the figure. Traditionally homiletics has been the ground, and hermeneutics the figure; homiletical theories have understood the hermeneutical step to be one mid-way through the homiletical process. When the figure-ground shift is effected, homiletics becomes the last step in the hermeneutical process. Homiletics becomes an extension of the hermeneutical process, rather than hermeneutics being a step in the homiletical process.Subjects--Topical Terms:

A figure-ground shift is proposed in which the hermeneutical theory of Paul Ricoeur becomes the ground and homiletics the figure. Traditionally homiletics has been the ground, and hermeneutics the figure; homiletical theories have understood the hermeneutical step to be one mid-way through the homiletical process. When the figure-ground shift is effected, homiletics becomes the last step in the hermeneutical process. Homiletics becomes an extension of the hermeneutical process, rather than hermeneutics being a step in the homiletical process.

The hermeneutical theory of Paul Ricoeur shows how the interpretation of the Word demands the proclamation of the Word; and how, in fact, the interpretation of the Word is not complete until the Word has been proclaimed. This effectively integrates the critical work with the biblical text, with traditional concerns of homiletical theory such as the purpose of preaching, the person of the preacher, the hearer and context. Furthermore, the hermeneutical theory of Paul Ricoeur provides a foundation wherein all the traditional concerns of homiletics can be seen as embryonically present in the hermeneutical encounter with the biblical text.

Chapter I discusses the nature of the problem, namely, that recent homiletical theories are dependent upon the Romanticist hermeneutical dichotomy between "understanding" and "explanation," handed down by Schleiermacher and Dilthey. When this hermeneutical dichotomy is foundational for homiletical theory, it fractures homiletical theory and confuses the way hermeneutical theory and homiletical theory function together. Chapter I also articulates the thesis and method.

In Chapter II, the theory of three contemporary homileticians, namely, John Killinger, David Buttrick, and Fred Craddock, is analyzed according to the way each treats six traditional components of preaching: purpose, message, preacher, hearer, context, pedagogy.

Chapter III presents the case for the figure-ground shift, using the hermeneutical theory of Paul Ricoeur as the new ground for homiletical theory. Ricoeur's approach to the interpretation of texts is described, showing how Ricoeur deals with the Romanticist hermeneutical impasse.

In Chapter IV, other homileticians who have noted the gap between hermeneutics and homiletics are discussed, and a new vision for homiletical theory is presented.
