According to the elders-led design philosophy, older adults may be better able than younger adults to determine products and product features that are easier for adults of all ages to use. The rationale for elders-led design is that older adults are more likely than younger adults to experience product usability difficulties because of age-related declines in motor, perceptual, and cognitive processing. Because of their experiences, older adults may be better able than younger adults to detect product usability deficiencies.

Although applying the elders-led design philosophy in consumer product evaluations appears to be warranted, none of the guiding assumptions of this design philosophy have been examined. Therefore, the purpose of the present research was to examine four untested assumptions of elders led design.

A 2 (Age) x 2 (Judgment Task Type) x 4 (Product) mixed-factorial design was used to examine the untested assumptions of elders-led design. Sixty older adults (age 65 to 75) and sixty younger adults (age 18 to 22) participated in the study. These participants made product usability judgments based on a single product design alternative that was presented to them or made judgments based on six different design alternatives of a product. The product usability judgments were made across four product types to determine if any potential performance advantages for older adults generalized across different product types.

An analysis of performance data revealed that older adults were more accurate than younger adults in making predictions about product usability, in identifying features that are critical to product usability, and in suggesting changes to features that might improve product usability. In addition, there was a performance advantage when participants were given multiple design alternatives to consider in their consumer product evaluations.

The study has provided the first known empirical support for some of the assumptions of elders-led design. The study has also provided valuable information about the performance of older adults in consumer product evaluations that would be of interest to professionals who study human factors and cognitive aging. Based on the findings of the study, consumer product evaluations could benefit from the inclusion of older adults as study participants.
