Based on the percentage of African-American students scoring Proficient or Advanced in English/Language Arts on the 2003 Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test (PACT) and the schools having no statistical differences on the South Carolina Poverty Index, this comparative study analyzed teacher efficacy in educating African-American students in four selected middle schools. The research sought to: (1) Assess teachers' personal efficacy. (2) Evaluate teachers' teaching efficacy. (3) Examine English/Language Arts teachers' personal and teaching efficacy. (4) Determine if there is a relationship between English/Language Arts teachers and non-English/Language Arts teachers in their perceptions of personal efficacy and teaching efficacy.

The study surveyed 111 teachers in four selected South Carolina public middle schools based on the percentage of African-American students scoring Proficient or Advanced in English/Language Arts on the 2003 Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test. An analysis of the results revealed that English/Language Arts teachers had consistently lower personal efficacy and lower teaching efficacy than non-English/Language Arts teachers in educating African-American students.
