Materialism, individualism and collective action were identified as manifestations of value orientations. The findings of the present study suggest that materialism and individualism were included in all twelve textbooks, whereas collective action was not. Gender and race were interpreted in the present study as manifestations of ideology. Women and men in the EFL textbooks examined were limited to traditional gender roles in career choices and occupations. Race was addressed from the stereotypical perspective of an Expanding Circle country. Hegemonic practices were identified in the representation of countries in the Inner Circle as urban and industrial, whereas countries in the Expanding Circle and Outer Circle were rural and with limited industry.

Additionally, general guidelines were proposed for use by the local Board of Education to guide publishers in developing better EFL textbooks for use in a Brazilian or other Expanding Circle context. Recommendations for further study were presented.
