The quasi-experimental study investigates the effectiveness of a nontraditional textbook design in economics for utilization in high school courses compared with the traditional textbook format. The subjects were 488 high school junior and senior students enrolled in an economics course, however only 321 completed all aspects of the study. One hundred and sixty nine were male, 152 were female. Subjects were not randomly assigned to groups, nor were their teachers. Control groups used a traditional high school economic textbook and experimental groups used Economics: Learning and Instruction. Both groups were pre and posttested using the Test of Economic Literacy and the Questionnaire on Student Attitude Toward Economics, during their one semester economics course.

A multiple regression analysis reveals a significant difference (.05 level) between groups on the dependent variable of knowledge but no difference (0.5 level) on the dependent variable of attitude. Since each group had a different instructor, the teacher effect cannot be ruled out.

Future research include utilizing the same teacher in both groups, utilizing a different attitude instrument in the study, and investigating which classroom activities particularly influenced knowledge and attitude beyond the textbook in the instruction of economics.
