Rather than surveying many different textbooks in a superficial manner, we selected the 1985 edition of Adventures in American Literature (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Publishers). In order to have adequate depth of analysis, we limited ourselves to the literature of the colonial period.

Because the translation of the Bible known as the King James Version was the one most likely to be recognized for its historical significance, the investigation made extensive use of that particular translation. Every reasonable attempt was made to track down a Biblical allusion by extensive use of a Bible concordance.

In the textbook introduction to the colonial literature, references to "grace," "divine mission," and "city upon a hill" all indicated Biblical influence. The selections from the histories of John Smith, William Bradford, and William Byrd proved (respectively) to contain mostly general, very specific, and very general allusions to the Bible.

In the poetry included in the textbook, that from Anne Bradstreet and Edward Taylor contained many Biblical allusions, while that from Phillis Wheatley contained surprisingly few.

In every sentence of the excerpt of Jonathan Edwards' sermon, Biblical influence was evident, often combining and repeating allusions within the same sentence.

At times Benjamin Franklin's writing seemed to suggest Biblical influence, but it was impossible to establish cause and effect. Patrick Henry frequently used Biblical allusion, while Thomas Paine tended to use general references to God. Thomas Jefferson's writing seemed to represent a political and religious consensus for colonial America.

Recommendations include recommending an interfaith book and devising a list of those allusions which seem important for understanding or appreciating the literature itself (or even the cultural influence of the Bible), listing well-known popular names, places, events, and phrases (as well as providing corresponding Biblical references). Further study may consider Biblical influence on the remaining selections used in the textbook, for divisions other than colonial.
