Thesis (Educat.D.)--Syracuse University, 1985.
Research has shown that recent music education graduates are inadequately trained in marching band techniques; however, there is often insufficient time in the curriculum for additional coursework. The solution to this problem developed in this study is the creation and evaluation of a linear programmed textbook in basic marching band charting techniques, which can be completed independently by undergraduates with no previous charting experience.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The programmed text has six chapters, as follows: (1) "A Brief History of Marching Band Show Design"; (2) "Chart Interpretation"; (3) "Readability"; (4) "Artistic Visual Design"; (5) "Instrument Placement"; (6) "Charting Exercises". The text is accompanied by slides of high school and university bands performing text diagrams.

After a review of the literature, the proposed text content was organized into individual items on an opinionnaire. In order to judge the accuracy of the opinionnaire items, fifteen expert band directors completed the opinionnaire to determine their agreement with the items. The experts agreed with most of the items, and the remaining items were dropped or revised before the textbook was constructed. The textbook was then constructed utilizing the opinionnaire items, and pilot-tested on student volunteers from the University of South Florida.

The programmed text met the evaluative criteria established for it, namely: (1) Eighty-seven percent of the time, the experts agreed with the text concepts. (2) All student volunteers scored above the established minimum acceptable percentage of eighty percent on the posttests. (3) On an opinionnaire measuring students' degrees of positive reactions to the text, all students reacted above the established minimum acceptable percentage of eighty percent. (4) Each student considered the time required for completing the text to be reasonable for the amount of knowledge gained, and the group mean time was 16 hours and 53 minutes. (5) The students created an original static nonrepresentational concert formation which was considered visually and musically effective. The formations were evaluated by the students themselves by completing a checklist containing text guidelines. All students scored at or above the established minimum of eighty percent of correct responses on the checklist.
