The primary purose of this two-part study was to compile functional keyboard materials in texbook form to be used by undergraduate non-keyboard music education majors in class piano at Plymouth (NH) State College. Part One included a survey of Northern New England music educators concerning their perceptions of the importance of twenty piano skills and the relationship of those skills to their teaching. Vital to this study was the survey and analysis of those twenty functional skills as they were presented in readily available published class piano texts for music education majors. Based on the relationship of the piano skills demanded by public school music educators to the inclusion of such skills in the texts reviewed, it became apparent that no one text, currently available, satisfies all the demands of future music educators.

Guidelines for the content of a piano class manual for music education majors were established from this investigation and constitute Part Two of the study, summarized below: (1) Piano classes for music education majors should emphasize the skills professionals in the field identify as most necessary: accompaniments, sight reading, chord progressions, harmonization, and transposition (2) These piano classes should include a moderate amount of preparation in other skills also used by music teachers: score reading, modulation, playing by ear, patriotic songs, improvisation, technique, and ensemble playing (3) Less emphasis should be placed on playing piano literature, memorization, and realization of a figured bass (4) Piano classes should reinforce concepts traditionally taught in other music classes: analysis, critical listening, and performing for others (5) Material used in the college piano classes for the preparation of music educators should pertain to actual teaching situations and should be presented in a progressive order of difficulty.
