This dissertation presents design and performance analysis of the nonlinear optical photo-mixer for all-optical generation of continuous wave sub-millimeter radiation based on the nonlinear optical polymers. The proposed device consists of a nonlinear optical polymer waveguide combined with a set of the sub-millimeter transmission lines coupled to antennas for extraction and radiation of the terahertz waves into the high index low sub-millimeter wave loss substrate. The analysis assumes high 50--100 dB/cm propagation loss in the polymer waveguide-transmission line structure. An efficient way of to reuse the optical pump is proposed, and analysis suggests that the proposed device should perform better then semiconductor photo-conductive photo-mixers above a frequency of approximately 3.5 THz.

This dissertation also presents results of experiments on the writing Bragg gratings by photo-bleaching in active polymer waveguide. Gratings were observed to decrease transmission by as much as 90% at the resonance frequency. Studies of the temperature stability of the induced index change show that significant deterioration starts at 80°C.
