The Internet, of which the Web is a part, is considered to be a major source of information for many people and in many different environments. The Internet is widely used in higher education institutions worldwide. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the how, why, and the degree of satisfaction of applied science and technology faculty members using the Internet in Jordan. Another purpose was to collect and analyze the data to determine the patterns of Internet use and to identify the concerns regarding the barriers hindering the effective use of the Internet in teaching and research activities. The study examined and compared the use of the Internet among various applied science and technology disciplines including medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, engineering, agriculture, and information technology. A combination of a written questionnaire and a follow-up email interviews was used in this study.

520 $a The study's findings indicate that the Internet is widely used among faculty members in Jordan and its use is similar to that in any other developed country. The most widely used applications are the Web for research and email for communication. Faculty members in Jordan find no discomfort in their use of the Internet and they perceive it as a very useful tool for research and communication. Certain schools use the Internet more than others. Gender and rank have little or no significant relationships in using the Internet, whereas age does show significant differences. Although faculty members in Jordan have raised some concerns about the reliability of information retrieved from the Internet, two third of the participants are either satisfied or very satisfied with the current status of the Internet as a research and communication tool. Lack of time, lack of access, lack of speed, lack of training, and lack of university support are the most important barriers for the effective use of the Internet in the academic environment. More training for the vast majority of faculty members in Jordan is recommended for all schools, ranks, and both genders.
