In Islam, the concepts of fear, power, and gender are intertwined with ideas of social order and social chaos. Islamic men's fear of women's sexual power and the associated chaos which would result from the unleashing of that power, is based on the fear of reversion to the pre-Islamic era, Jahiliyyah, a time of social and sexual disorder. For an Islamic man, intercourse is a time of vulnerability. But for Islamic women, this is the moment from which they draw their power---the power to cause fear in Islamic men. This thesis uses information gleaned from translations of the Qur'an and a number of Islamic and Feminist scholars. It is about the concept of raw unharnessed female sexual power and the suppression or containment of that power. The results of this research demonstrates that fear of women's power is a potent cause of suppression of women's socio-political role in society.
