Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Southern California, 2004.
This dissertation argues that George Lucas has played a role of unparalleled importance in the creation of the New Hollywood. Framing the argument is an examination of the historical, industrial, aesthetic, and cultural shifts that have occurred during the last thirty plus years beginning with Lucas's arrival in Hollywood. His contribution to the film industry on these levels is what is called the "Lucas Effect."

From an historical and industrial standpoint, Lucas's work is used as a lens to study current Hollywood business practices. His movement from auteur to entrepreneur during this time parallels two distinct phases the New Hollywood has undergone since the fall of the studio system. Furthermore, while creating a market for his films Lucas builds both an audience and a fan base. To understand this fan base, a three-year ethnographic study was conducted with Star Wars fans via in-person interviews, on-line discussions, and while "standing in line" for opening night screenings of Phantom Menace: Episode I and Attack of the Clones: Episode II in Hollywood. This study of fan practices serves to demonstrate how meaning is circulated within a larger fan community.

From an aesthetic and cultural standpoint, Lucas has influenced the type of film we are most apt to see---special effects laden, visceral, blockbuster fare filled with "guilty" pleasures. While seemingly classical in style, Lucas has always been sensitive to the changing pace of the times and actually utilizes a mixture of classic, modern and postmodern styles. As such, he has helped to accelerate the postmodern aesthetic in our culture. Along with the shift toward the postmodern is the increasing trend of American popular culture to be bought and sold on the global market. Increased circulation and the commodification of images beg further questions about film authorship and "who owns a film?" Finally, the technological, commercial, and artistic implications of Lucas's shift toward digitalization are examined, including what some consider the "death of cinema."
