Gas chromatography and the relative rate method have been used to study the kinetics and mechanisms of Cl atom reactions with naphthalene and alkylnaphthalenes at 298 K and 1 atm. An upper limit for the reaction rate constant for naphthalene has been determined to be 3 x 10-12 cm3molecule-1s-1. The reported rate constant is an upper limit value due to a possible interference by secondary radicals. Preliminary results suggest that the alkylnaphthalene rate constants are significantly faster, but measurements may also be subject to an interference. The kinetic isotope effect (KIE) and the product analysis indicate that the reaction of Cl atoms with naphthalene occurs predominantly via radical addition to the aromatic ring. A similar analysis of the Cl atom and 1-methylnapthalene reaction suggests that the reaction proceeds via both addition and abstraction. A comparison to reactions with OH and NO3 radicals, along with the implications to fundamental and atmospheric chemistry, are also discussed.
