Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were employed to characterize the surface species formed on gold nanoparticle surfaces prepared from reduction of gold (III) by potassium sulfite in aqueous solution. Raman spectroscopy measurements show evidence of adsorption of both, SO4-2 and SO3-2 on the gold nanoparticles surface. The symmetric S-O stretch frequency shifts to higher values upon adsorption of sulfate or sulfite on the gold particle surface as compared to free sulfate or sulfite ions in solution, consistent with recent theoretical calculations performed. SEM analyses show that small gold particles of about 200 to 800 nm were formed. This is confirmed by EDS analyses. EDS mapping reveals the presence of sulfur and oxygen on a gold nanoparticle surface. The Raman measurements presented here represent the first characterization of surface species formed in the synthesis of gold particles from reduction of gold (III) with potassium sulfite.
