Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Missouri - Kansas City, 2004.
This research is a qualitative study on three teachers whose students showed improvement on student achievement scores on MAP (Missouri Assessment Program) tests from one year to the next. A critical review of the historical and political contexts of testing, along with an analysis of the research on the theoretical aspects of efficacy and teacher effectiveness, provides a framework for a greater understanding of the impact of these tests in Missouri.

Like many states across the nation, Missouri has adopted accountability standards that tie directly to school district accreditation. Pressure on school districts to meet the standards has placed a heavy burden on teachers and administrators. This research study examines the efficacy and teaching characteristics of three third grade teachers who were deemed successful by their school district for showing improvement on the state mandated testing.

Through the use of classroom observations and interviews, this study examined the efficacy and teaching methods used by these three third grade teachers. My findings include the commonalties among the teachers in my study related to the use of effective teaching techniques, their willingness to collaborate together in order to improve student learning and student test scores, and their belief in the importance of parental involvement. This dissertation also illustrates the teacher's frustration with dealing with the Missouri state-mandated tests and the way in which the data gathered from these tests are being used.
