Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Dominguez Hills, 2004.
Scholars and laymen alike have long studied to what extent, if any, Old Testament scripture draws upon the literary and religious traditions of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. There are clearly literary parallels between certain ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian texts and various Old Testament scriptures, but the Israelites brought a new religious understanding to the literary works of their predecessors. This reminds us that we do not live in a cultural vacuum, yet independent religious development can occur under similar cultural conditions. The study makes use of primary and secondary sources pertaining to the religious traditions of ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Israel. Results of this study support the thesis that there is a literary parallel between ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian texts and selective biblical scripture; however, the Israelites did, indeed, bring new meaning to old philosophies. The literary tradition of ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt was infused with a new understanding: a spiritual understanding that would give birth to a new world view and a new religion.
