Suspicion that 1 Thessalonians is a pseudepigraphical Deutero-Pauline letter has a long history. However, no one has ever tried to compare 1 Thessalonians with Deutero-Pauline materials. In that regard, this study has significance because it is the first time that 1 Thessalonians has been seriously compared with 1 and 2 Peter, Ephesians, Pastorals, and Gnostic writings and others with the purpose of demonstrating the late date & non-Pauline authorship of 1 Thessalonians chapters 4--5.

1 Thessalonians and the Petrine literature share the election theology and warning to be awake to live a life worthy of one's calling. Both 1 Thessalonians and 1 and 2 Peter are mainly paraenesis, which means the purpose of their writing is to prevent the Gentile Christians from going back to their former life style and to establish an organized Church community. In the matter of eschatology, both Ephesians and 1 Thessalonians emphasize ascent/descent eschatology, which is different from the apocalyptic eschatology of Paul. The tension of now-and-then or Jewish eschatological thinking of present age versus the future coming age is replaced by being caught up to heaven (1 Thessalonians) and also by being already enthroned with Jesus in the heaven (Ephesians). Many concepts such as sleeping, waking up, light, darkness appear in both 1 Thessalonians and Ephesians, an indication of the influence of Gnostic ways of thinking.

1 Thessalonians has many strata. The sources used by the editors were not at all eschatological in their characters. The eschatological materials including 4:13--17, 1:9--10 were added by the first editor/editors in order to make non-eschatological materials be apocalyptically oriented. The second editor corrected the apocalyptic materials by adding chapter 5, which criticizes the apocalyptical expectation of the early Christians. This kind of compositional theory can resolve the inner conflicts within chapters 4 and 5, which are apparently made from the patchwork of many different sources.

In conclusion, 1 Thessalonians is a composite letter edited by editor/editors who belong to some school or community that had no connection with Pauline School.
