This study describes and analyzes the self reports of three culturally diverse early childhood educators regarding their family involvement strategies in their primary grade classrooms. An Hispanic, an African American, and a Caucasian teacher make up the three recommended teachers who completed questionnaires and four interviews each. Parents of the students in their classes completed questionnaires. Artifacts that resulted from family involvement strategies were examined. Resultant recurrent themes are identified to answer research questions related to family involvement strategies, especially across cultural lines.

This study is grounded in the belief that the two cornerstones of children's socialization and education are families and schools. Both institutions have a common responsibility for helping children understand and live in their society as well as acquire knowledge and develop lifelong learning skills. The mutual support and reciprocal exchanges between families and school staff are essential elements to a young child's level of school success. While most studies acknowledge the importance of family involvement in a young child's education, few flesh out the details as to how the family-school partnership might look in practice. This study provides details about the motivation and strategies of three classroom teachers who choose diverse methods to involve family members in the education of their young children.

Teachers who recognize that increasing family involvement in their children's education is important to school success often create remarkable strategies to empower families of young children. The stories and strategies of such teachers are shared in this study with the qualitative methodology of portraiture.
