The Book of Hosea contains a variety of metaphors that add evocative power to the prophet's message. One of the central metaphors is the metaphor of illness and healing, which is explicitly or implicitly mentioned with frequency throughout the text. Various attempts to interpret the metaphor of illness and healing have focused primarily on its association with sin and salvation. But this study first of all seeks the social connotations of the metaphor of illness and healing in Hos. 5:8--6:3 and 7:1--7. It argues that Hosea, appealing to social bonds and reciprocity, moral values commonly held by Israelite peasants, which are regarded as health, sought polemically to validate a radical reversal (healing) of the illness represented by the current oppressive and foreign socio-economic system that was escalating the disintegration of social unity. In so doing, a theoretical analysis of metaphor is incorporated into a sociological discussion about the hypothetical reconstruction of the social reality of eighth-century Israel and Judah as well as a comparative study of the concept of illness and healing in the ancient Near East and traditional Korea.

Following a discussion of metaphor theories in Chapter Two that establishes a working definition of "metaphor" for the analysis of the metaphor of illness and healing, Chapter Three focuses on a comparative analysis of the concept of illness and healing in ancient Israel, the ancient Near East, and traditional Korea, claiming that while illness refers primarily to the invasion of foreign agents, healing refers to the expulsion of the foreign agents. Based on a diachronic survey of the systemic change of the socio-economic structures in ancient Israel, Chapter Four argues that the socio-economic structures of Israel and Judah take their worst form in the eighth century B.C.E., deepening social conflict. Chapter Five sets forth the reference of illness to foreignness represented by commercialization and internationalization and political treachery within the royal court and the reference of healing to the desired restoration of the society which is rooted in social solidarity and mutuality. Chapter Six draws conclusions about the significance of illness and healing in Hosea and offer some suggestions for further study.
