The purpose of this study was to extend the examination of various psychometric properties of the Writing Developmental Continuum (WDC). The WDC is a classroom-based assessment tool used periodically during a school year to measure the emergent writing development of young children in Kindergarten through grade 2. The WDC scale was designed to capture the qualitative changes that are evidenced as children construct their understanding of written language.

The purpose of this study was to extend the examination of various psychometric properties of the Writing Developmental Continuum (WDC). The WDC is a classroom-based assessment tool used periodically during a school year to measure the emergent writing development of young children in Kindergarten through grade 2. Participants were enrolled in one administrative cluster of schools in a large urban school district. It was the first cluster in the district to systematically train all teachers to administer the WDC. The sample included approximately 1,000 students who were enrolled in Kindergarten in either 1998 or 1999. The ethnic background of the study sample includes approximately 38% African American, 6% Hispanic, 38% White, and 19% Asian Pacific American students.

The research questions for this study sought to examine both the structural and external aspects of construct validity (Messick, 1989) by, first examining the ability of the WDC scale to measure writing development over time, and second, by examining convergent and discriminant evidence of construct validity.

Regarding the structural aspect, the results provide evidence that the WDC does measure development of writing over time. The results of a longitudinal analysis showed the average WDC score increased significantly, each year, between Kindergarten and grade 2.

The external aspect of validity was addressed by examining the relationship between WDC scores and other variables. Cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses were used to obtain evidence of convergent and discriminant validity. The results showed that there is a significant positive correlation between WDC scores and these variables at all grade levels, which provides some evidence of convergent validity. Evidence of divergent validity was partially demonstrated.

Overall, the results of this study support the use of the WDC, as a measure of early writing development, by teachers in Kindergarten through grade 2 classrooms. Teachers and school administrators are cautioned that sufficient training and practice must be provided in order to ensure that the WDC is implemented in a reliable manner.
