Peer-to-peer systems consist of entities which are equivalent in functionalities. Information are stored at peers and are transferred directly between peers. Via collaboration, participating peers in a peer-to-peer system share their local resources among themselves or jointly work on a task by exchanging their state information. Beyond their recent popularity, peer-to-peer systems represents a significant new information delivery paradigm that has the potential to re-shape the architecture of the Internet in the long run.

A type of peer-to-peer system that relies on state dissemination is multi-user game. We first study the techniques that divide the players into groups and use multicast groups to facilitate the information dissemination. Specifically, we investigate two grouping strategies: cell-based grouping and entity-based grouping. Our goal is to understand the tradeoff between grouping overhead and communication overhead and compare the cost of both strategies under various conditions.

Peer-to-peer systems that are dedicated to resource sharing are typified by file sharing systems. We propose peer selection problem and identify its differences from traditional server selection problem. We then study the problem both theoretically and using simulation. The result shows that a distributed greedy peer selection algorithm yields good performance. We also investigate the effect of the partial peer information and several request buffering techniques on the performance of the file retrieval process. The results have implications for the design of high performance, low overhead file sharing systems.

Finally, to understand the file propagation process and its effect on the performance of a file sharing system, we develop a flexible theoretical file-centric model of the system and study the effect of peer behaviors on the system performance.
