Thesis (Ph.D.)--New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, 2004.
Traditional scholarship on Mark's Gospel explained the Markan agenda of narrating the Last Supper passage for the most part as an attempt to preserve the tradition and to provide a historical base for celebrating the Lord's Supper. More recent studies on the Last Supper in Mark consider the passage as a part of the discipleship theme of the Gospel. The purpose of this dissertation was to analyze the Last Supper's relationship to both the temple theme and the death of Jesus theme in Mark's Gospel in order to determine the degree to which the Last Supper conveys the overall meaning of Jesus' death. The thesis was that Mark used the Last Supper passage as a central text to communicate to his readers a meaning of Jesus' death that not only encompassed atoning and soteriological significance but also had an impact on the temple cult.

The initial chapter included a survey of scholarly discussions of the Last Supper passages in the New Testament. This investigation revealed that the Last Supper passage in the Gospel of Mark has not received adequate attention from the standpoint of the Markan agenda that took into consideration the temple theme and the death of Jesus theme in the Gospel.

In the third chapter, the relationship of the Last Supper to the temple program of Jesus was examined. Two key aspects were identified regarding the way Mark tied the Last Supper to the temple theme: Passover and the redefinition of the Passover in terms of Jesus' sacrificial death.

In the fourth chapter, the researcher attempted to refine Mark's understanding of the meaning of Jesus' death by considering the Last Supper as a part of the death of Jesus theme. Conclusions for how the Last Supper passage in Mark should be read and understood culminate the study. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
