This study investigated teachers' perceptions regarding the usefulness of the Systematic Screening for Behavior Disorders (SSBD) instrument devised by Severson and Walker to identify elementary students at risk for internalizing externalizing behavior disorders in their early school years.

The participants in this study consisted of 8 teachers and 176 students (from two elementary schools) in Grades 1--4. Using the SSBD instrument, participants identified the 10 highest externalizers and the 10 highest internalizers in their classes. Then, each teacher completed Stage 2 of the SSBD and the Adaptive & Maladaptive Behavior Scale for the three highest students identified as externalizers and internalizers. Teachers were able to identify students at risk for externalizing and internalizing behavioral disorders. Data were collected from the SSBD process and through teacher surveys and interviews. The data were analyzed using basic frequency counts and percentages.

The results of this study showed that not every student passed through every category of the SSBD Stage 2 CEI criteria, or advanced to the maladaptive category of the SSBD based on teachers perceptions. However, teacher perceptions did mirror similar findings by Severson and Walker (1992) and Jenkins (1997) where the male students scored higher on externalizing behavior characteristics and the females scored higher on the internalizing behavior characteristics. The teachers perceived the SSBD process to be useful, efficient, and effective. This study has implications for helping teachers identify potential behavior problems in the classroom. Recommendations are made for early screening, identification and intervention for students at risk for externalizing or internalizing behavioral disorders.
