This dissertation explores the relationships between John 6 and Exodus. Although many interpreters have noted connections between these texts, the predominant reading has been to emphasize the way in which Jesus replaces or supersedes the former things. For example, most have identified an explicit reference to manna followed by a quotation from scripture in John 6:30--31. Interpretations of these verses usually emphasize a contrast between Jesus and manna: it is not the manna (a past, physical bread) but Jesus (a present, spiritual bread) that God is now offering to the people. As an alternative to this reading strategy, I argue that elements of the Exodus story are used in a constructive way to understand who Jesus is. The reader draws on aspects of the manna and puts them in relationship to Jesus. The emerging picture is one in which Jesus is manna. He is sent by God to give life to the people in the wilderness.

Drawing on literary discussions of allusion and metaphor, I argue that there are multiple allusions to Exodus in John 6, through which John forges relationships between Jesus' story and the Exodus story. My understanding of allusion and metaphor is a cultural one. In making an allusion, the author draws on the Exodus story as it is conventionally understood in that culture. My exploration of ancient Jewish interpreters of Exodus supports my identification of allusions in John 6. John's allusions draw on conventional descriptions such as manna as "bread from heaven," and paraphrases elements of the Exodus story like the Israelites' failure to believe God following their deliverance from Egypt.

My interpretation of John 6 reads the language of John 6 as allusion and interprets those allusions metaphorically. This reading leads to an understanding of John as an interpreter of Exodus who, like other contemporary Jewish interpreters, sees current experiences in light of the Exodus story. John's metaphors give rise to new ways of understanding who Jesus is. This approach to John offers new possibilities for assessing the nature of John's relationship to Jewish scripture, dualism, and metaphorical language.
