Thesis (Ed.D.)--Wilmington College (Delaware), 2004.
This exploratory research examined the relationship and change in computer anxiety and computer self-efficacy after employees participated in an online technical training course. The course was designed to help specialists troubleshoot chemistry and hardware issues with a new clinical chemistry analyzer. The participants for this study included 67 conveniently available full-time chemistry and hardware technical specialists (37 males, 30 females) both in-house and remote, who worked in the Technical Assistance Center of a medical diagnostic organization and who participated in the online technical training course offered during the spring and summer 2003.

A demographic questionnaire was used to gathered and analyzed data from 51 technical specialists. Two pretest and posttest Likert-type surveys were used to examine the facets of computer self-efficacy (CSE) and computer anxiety (CAX): Computer Self-Efficacy Scale (CSES) and the Computer Anxiety Rating Scale (CARS). Five interviews were conducted to gain further insight into the nature of the computer anxiety and computer self-efficacy experienced by the participants.

This data showed a negative correlation with pre/post CARS when CSES was the criterion, indicating that individuals who experienced higher levels of computer anxiety were less likely to report high levels of computer self-efficacy and vice versa. There was also a strong correlation between computer experience and CSE. Paired t-tests showed there were statistically significant differences in CSE mean scores for those individuals who had reported greater computer experience and who attended a computer-training course. Those individuals who reported greater computer experience had significantly lower pre/post computer anxiety scores.

Computer experience was the most important predictor of CSE and CAX before and after the online training course. The data showed that as the older, female technical specialists progressed through the online training, they gained more experience and became more familiar with the software over time, which decreased their computer anxiety level.

The data collected from the five individual interviews suggested that the majority of the technical specialists enjoyed the online training once they were able to resolve the connectivity and navigating issues. The participants reported the lack of hands-on interaction with the analyzer and face-to-face communication with an educator as barriers to learning online.
