Growing research has indicated that music study may be beneficial for other academic subjects. Support for this theory includes studies that have shown an increase in spatial awareness and cerebral cortex size, and improved standardized testing scores in reading and math. A relationship between music skills and reading skills suggests that the increased learning in one may increase outcomes in the other. The national arts standards recommend general music education for all students in kindergarten through grade 12. This study evaluated whether increased time spent in general music class in kindergarten through grade 3 improved reading and language scores in grade 4 standardized testing.

520 $a Two school districts with an identical reading series (language arts) and comparable socio-economic status, but different amounts of allocated general music class time (a difference of 17.5 minutes per 6-day cycle) were selected to participate in the study. The fourth grade students' archived kindergarten records and archived TerraNova (reading and language) test scores were recorded, and the students were administered the Iowa Test of Music Literacy. Information from a parent consent form, classroom and music teacher anecdotal records, and observation by an independent evaluator was used to control extraneous variables. The study was completed in a 10-week marking period.
520 $a The results of the kindergarten records, reading and language portions of the TerraNova test scores, and results from the Iowa Test of Music Literacy for the students from the two schools were compared using a two-tailed t-test. Results of the two-tailed t-test indicate that there was no relationship between the amount of time spent in general music class and the results of the standardized reading and language test. This may indicate that reduction or increases of up to 17.5 minutes per 6-day cycle of general music class time in grades kindergarten through grade 3 may not influence reading and language achievement in grade 4 standardized tests.
