Smallholder farmers in lower-income countries are vulnerable to declining and fluctuating commodity prices. Existing studies use economic analysis to examine interventions for reducing smallholder vulnerability. I argue that layering a multidimensional analysis onto conventional economic analysis yields results that are more useful for effective policy-making. I examine the Tanzanian coffee industry and evaluate two market-based interventions---Fairtrade and TechnoServe. I seek to (1) determine the strengths and weaknesses of each intervention in impacting smallholder livelihoods, and (2) determine if economic analysis of income effects is sufficient for assessing smallholder development impacts. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected using rapid appraisal methodology, and are analyzed using the sustainable livelihoods framework. Three months of field research shows that an evaluation limited to economic analysis yields a conclusion of limited strategic value while including a multidimensional analysis reveals each intervention's strategic strengths and weaknesses and suggests each are conducive to different market conditions.
