Maintaining pristine conditions in lakes and rivers is a priority for many communities. They provide a source of drinking water for over 167 million people in the United States and are used recreationally by over 71 million. A simple and effective way to monitor pollution in these water bodies is through the use of Passive In-Situ Concentration and Extraction Samplers (PISCES). These devices are able to collect low levels of organic pollutants in water and concentrate them for analysis.

From 2001 to 2003, Onondaga Lake, Canandaigua Lake, Cayuga Lake, Lake George and Oneida River were monitored for gasoline pollution using PISCES. Onondaga Lake, in particular represented a unique opportunity to observe the difference in magnitude between gasoline contamination from ambient sources (atmospheric deposition, road runoff, and inputs from tributaries) and from motor boats. Typically, Onondaga Lake is not used recreationally because it is highly polluted. In 2001 and 2002, however, fishing derbies held on the lake attracted thousands of motor boats. They were conducted over 1 weekend in each year the contest was held. To determine their impact, PISCES were deployed at several locations and sampled the water weeks before, during, and after the derbies. The comparison between gasoline contamination in the lake during the derbies and ambient levels indicated motor boats were the prime contributors of gasoline to the lake. In the other studied lakes, temporal and spatial trends of gasoline contamination also indicated that high motor boat activity was associated with elevated levels of gasoline contamination.
