Germination, shoot growth, root growth and incidence of seedborne fungi were determined for untreated, fenbuconazole treated and myclobutanil treated Wakefield wheat seed. Fungicide seed treatment did not significantly affect percent germination. Seed treated with 59 ml/45.4 kg of myclobutanil had 100% germination, and seedlings germinating from seed treated at 118 ml/45.4 kg exhibited abnormal growth and discoloration. Five seed treatments reduced shoot growth and four seed treatments reduced root growth. All rates of myclobutanil reduced root and shoot growth. Eleven fungal genera were isolated from treated and untreated seed. Alternaria spp. were the most frequently isolated fungal genera from seed. Wakefield soft red winter wheat seed were treated with fenbuconazole or myclobutanil to determine effects on seedling stand, pathogenic fungi, growth rate and yield components. Treatment with myclobutanil reduced seedling stand. In the 1999--2000 growing season, seed treatment with myclobutanil reduced the incidence of Fusarium spp. in crowns and increased incidence in roots. In the 2000--2001 growing season, seed treatment with fenbuconazole or myclobutanil reduced the incidence of Bipolaris spp. in crown and root tissues of seedling wheat. Seed treatments also increased the rate of wheat seedling growth. Fenbuconazole seed treatment had no effect on number of tillers per plant, mature plant height, yield or spikes per plant. In one season all rates of myclobutanil reduced yield.
