This study was conducted to identify land cover patterns and trends in the period of 1972 through 1999 as the indicator of urbanization in Kansas City metropolitan including five study counties using satellite remote sensing techniques. The study also analyzed other urbanization-related variables to determine which can serve as additional indicator(s) of urban sprawl. Supervised image classification technique was implemented on three satellite images (1972, 1985, and 1999). This classification delineated five land cover types on the satellite imagery: residential built-up land, commercial built-up land, forestland, non-forest vegetation, and water. The remote sensing results revealed that land cover change in the study area was significant over the 27-year time frame. Generally, commercial and residential land cover increased while forest and non-forest vegetation decreased. This landscape modification was spatially diverse with varied rates of change among the five individual study counties. The study suggests that remotely sensed land cover dynamics is a reliable indicator of urban sprawl.

Other urbanization-related variables including population, major road, and housing were analyzed in comparison with remotely sensed land cover data. Population analysis indicated that the population changes had similar patterns as that of the built-up areas generated from the remote sensing analysis. This suggests that the population's spatial and temporal distribution can serve as a good indicator of urban sprawl if used alone or combined with remotely sensed land cover data. The buffer analysis on the roadway data was conducted using GIS. The results showed that this analysis could help reveal the relationship between the major roads and the major land cover type along the roads. However, to fully understand the impact of the roads on urbanization, more detailed information is needed, such as the history of road construction and modification. The housing analysis indicated that housing data could have a good correlation with remotely sensed residential land cover changes while the relationship between this data set and other land cover types were weak. This result suggests that housing information can be used in conjunction with other indicators to help verify the process of urban sprawl.
