Improving child health and education are now accepted as universal priorities by policy makers. In this dissertation, I examine three fundamental factors affecting child health and education in India: affirmative action policies, economic inequality and family size.

In the first essay, I examine the effect of affirmative action programs introduced in 1992 on educational attainment of the targeted group. Using three dimensions of comparison: over time, between the targeted group and other socio-economic groups, and between states with and without a history of such programs, I find that the program increased educational attainment amongst children in the targeted group. Moreover, I find that the benefits are not restricted to the economically advantaged.

In the second essay, I extend the literature on social consequences of economic inequality to developing countries and examine how economic inequality affects educational attainment. The effect of inequality is found to vary with the nature of the democratic political process with education policies playing a crucial mediating role.

The third essay examines the causal effect of family size on child health and immunization using the method of instrument variables. The instruments used are the sex of the first child born in the family and the occurrence of twin births. The results demonstrate that on average family size has no effect on the measures of health examined here for surviving children. However, the analysis does suggest that children---particularly girls, in well-off families and in villages with health care centers benefit more from reduced sibling competition.
