Accountability is often named as an important attribute and competence required for business and personal success. While existing research has examined accountability and the affect on the individual, little research has been done on the effect of the individual on accountability. Justice systems, psychology and organizational development scholars have largely neglected the function of personality in relation to accountable behavior. This research analyzes self-knowledge, self-awareness and self-management in relationship to accountability. Mainstream modern psychology calls this "purposive behavior," or "intentionality," or "decision making," or "self-control". This makes the fundamental condition for behavioral outcomes 'choice'. Accountability, on the other hand, is an obligation and willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one's behavioral outcomes and includes internal driving forces and fundamental personality components. This means people choose their behavior and will be accountable because they choose to be accountable, not because someone has told them to be accountable. Using a Grounded Theory approach, this study explores personality traits contributing to accountable behavior. A literature review and interviews with 15 individuals were used to gain a perspective on factors contributing to accountability. A list of 29 traits emerged from this analysis. After identifying the personality traits contributing to accountable behavior, a quantitative analysis was conducted. An online survey was developed to verify the extracted traits and validate the findings. 337 people from around the world participated in the survey. The results of this study indicate that 14 predominant traits contribute to accountable behavior. These traits can be placed on two vectors (self management and commitment) and additionally can create four quadrants for identifying and categorizing the personality styles of the accountable person. These results support a framework in which general personality traits influence accountable behavior and ultimately accountability outcomes. This research provides a theoretical contribution to the field of human system dynamics and will aid further research on this topic.
