Foster and adoptive mothers often report believing they are the target of their child's attachment disordered behaviors. This is in keeping with a hierarchy prediction of attachment theory; when stressed children seek the mother first. Risk factors for attachment disordered behaviors include multiple placements and orphanage care. This study examined the relationship of parental gender, number of placements and time in an orphanage as foster or adoptive parents (N = 39) individually scored their child's attachment disordered behaviors. Correlational analysis statistically revealed that the mothers' significantly scored the children's behavior higher than the fathers' (p < .0001). No linear relationship was found for number of placements. Small sample size (n = 2) for orphanage history prohibited statistical analysis of that variable.
