Learning is a lifelong process, and most adult learning occurs outside the formal, traditionally conceived boundaries of institutions. The human resource development network (HRDN) at Northern Illinois University (NIU) is an example of this nontraditional, informal learning. Participants created this network to fill the gaps in their own learning.

This study of the HRDN at NIU has determined that HRD professionals have successfully conceived and directed their own professional development. Research data came from interviews of 33 participants, participant observation, and documentary analysis.
