In the 1980s, some Ersu intellectuals made a request to the Chinese state for Ersu to be recognized as an autonomous minzu-Ersuzu or Ersu nationality. Meanwhile, some other members of the group insisted on being recognized as Zang or Tibetan nationality. To this day, there are two main factions among Ersu: one faction wishes to identify themselves as Ersu and another faction prefers to be Zang or Tibetan. The Ersu faction wants to be classified as an autonomous minzu, while the Zang faction wants to identify themselves as a Tibetan sub-group. In addition, there are others, especially the less educated ones, who do not mind to be classified as either Ersu or Zang. In other words, there are three ways of choosing identities among the Ersu people.

This dissertation examines the diverse views on choosing ethnic identities among Ersu people. It discusses how they choose and construct their ethnic identities. It is a study of Ersu ethnogenesis. The study shows that the state plays a crucial role in the people's politics of identities. Both local ethnic interaction and Chinese minzu policy have contributed to the intensification of ethnic consciousness among the Ersu. Seeking the best economic and political advantages, as well as the better position in relations of power, Ersu people choose their ethnic identities rationally in diverse ways. They construct their identities by reinterpretation history and using minzu discourse.

This study contributes to the ethnography of Ersu as well as an understanding of state policy and ethnogenesis. It shows the relevance of rational choice theory in understanding choice of identities among an ethnic minority in China. It also shows the importance of both historical interpretation and use of cultural features in identity expression.
