Twin and non-twin tetraploid, pentaploid and hexaploid seedlings of Eastern gamagrass (Tripsacum dactyloides) were compared for germination time, coleoptile length, growth rate, guard cell length, stomatal density, biomass, water content, leaf chlorophyll content, chlorophyll a/b ratio, leaf protein content, root respiration rate, phosphate uptake rate and translocation in order to assess the selective advantage of twinning and tetraploidy. Sections of ovaries and caryopses from florets in various stages of anthesis were examined and confirmed that the population is primarily apomictic. Tetraploid twin-by-twin comparisons were made in an attempt to explain the possible origin of each twin.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Increases in ploidy level resulted in complex changes in the characteristics examined. These may have been due to partial genome duplication (from 4n to 5n to 6n) or to enhanced influence of regulator genes. Nevertheless, tetraploid seedlings grew faster and possessed higher rates of radiophosphate uptake and respiration which may contribute to their competitive advantage over plants of other ploidy levels.

When the larger members of tetraploid twin pairs were compared to tetraploid non-twins, the differences between the two groups were minimal, indicating that at least one member of a twin pair had a chance for survival equal to that of the non-twins. Although twins would seem to be at a disadvantage due to competition resulting from their proximity as embryos and seedlings, caryopses with twin embryos germinated at a significantly higher rate than did single-embryo caryopses. If twinning were genetically controlled, it would tend to be perpetuated at the high frequency noted for gamagrass. Tetraploid twin-by-twin correlations revealed that most twins were different from each other, but because of apomixis and the probable absence of meiosis, twin mates should be genetically alike. Their phenotypic differences may have been due to differences in cell origin (egg versus synergid) and/or positions within the same caryopsis.
