Many freshwater fisheries are based on stocks of migratory fish. These fisheries support the subsistence needs of communities around the world, most notably in tropical South America, Africa, and Asia. These fisheries, however, have come under increasing pressure from a rapidly growing human population, raising serious concerns over their depletion. This situation has caused growing recognition of the need to develop management strategies to conserve and enhance fisheries for migratory species. In Southeast Asia, one family of heavily exploited catfish, Pangasiidae, is particularly vulnerable because of their migratory behavior, requirements for specific water quality and flow, and complex life histories that are dependent on the seasonal floods. This dissertation focuses on the ecology and migrations of pangasiid catfish; documents the importance of their fishery in the Mekong River Basin and discusses the potential impacts of hydropower development in relation to catfish ecology and migration.
