The Philippine Jesuits sponsor eight high schools and nine elementary schools. Upholding the Jesuit character of these schools has become a serious concern because of the dwindling number of Jesuits available to staff the schools. Consequently, lay teachers have increasingly been relied upon for leadership in the schools. The purpose of this study was to investigate what tenured lay teachers of Jesuit secondary schools in the Philippines understood about the characteristics of Jesuit education; the extent to which tenured lay teachers integrated the characteristics of Jesuit education in their interactions with students; the faculty formation activities attended by tenured teachers; and, teachers' perceptions of the effectiveness of each formation activity in promoting understanding of the characteristics of Jesuit education.

An 88-item self-reported survey instrument was designed by the researcher to collect the data. A paired sample t test determined that the instrument provided stable measurements of teachers' understanding and the extent of application of the characteristics of Jesuit education. Additionally, the Cronbach's Alpha test showed that the survey items were internally consistent.

The research sample consisted of 84% of the population of tenured lay teachers in eight Philippine Jesuit high schools in the school year 2003--2004. Findings indicated that tenured teachers in Philippine Jesuit high schools had a moderate understanding of key concepts regarding the characteristics of Jesuit education. Teachers perceived themselves as "frequently" applying the characteristics of Jesuit education. At least 90% of the respondents had attended 15 of 20 institutional formation activities, and the activities were perceived to be helpful in promoting teachers' understanding of the characteristics of Jesuit education. Thus, the results of this study indicated that the faculty formation activities should be provided on an ongoing basis so that lay teachers themselves may become the Ignatian leaders that Jesuit education aims to produce: leaders-in-service, men-and-women-for-others, and people of competence, conscience, and compassionate commitment.
