Bands have always been an important part of the military, to inspire troops and civilians alike during war and peacetime. However, little is known about the roles that African-American musicians played as bandmasters, as well as performers throughout the early history of this country's military musical organizations.

This dissertation is a study of the life, career and experiences of Wade H. Hammond (1879--1957), an African-American military bandmaster who lived during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Mr. Hammond became one of the first African-American bandmasters in the United States Army in 1909.

Wade Hammond was raised and educated in the state of Alabama. He received a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Degree from Alabama A&M College and further musical training at the Royal Military School of Music in England. Prior to his appointment as Chief Musician (bandmaster) in the United States Army, Mr. Hammond taught at Alabama A&M College and Western University.

Wade Hammond was appointed Chief Musician as a result of a special order issued by President Theodore Roosevelt. He was assigned to the Ninth United States Cavalry. Hammond also served as bandmaster of the Tenth Cavalry and Twenty-Fifth Infantry in later years. He was a well respected musician and his college and military bands were always popular with audiences wherever they performed.

Throughout his career, Mr. Hammond sometimes toured as a guest conductor. On one occasion, he was invited to serve as a guest bandleader at Tuskegee Institute and on another he was selected to conduct a massed military band in the Philippines.

Upon his retirement from the military, Wade Hammond became active in community and civic organizations. He organized the Urban League in Phoenix, and was a member of the Phoenix Housing Authority, as well as the National Association of Housing Officials. When Carver High School in Phoenix was established, Mr. Hammond started a band at the school.
