While universally recognized as an ecologically important and visually dramatic part of the worldwide tropical flora, the evolution and diversification of the monocotyledonous plant family Costaceae (Zingiberales) has not been previously examined in a phylogenetic context. In order to determine the evolutionary history of the family and provide a framework for investigating morphological and biogeographic diversification, a phylogenetic study of the family is presented using both molecular and morphological data analyzed in a cladistic framework. The results from this analysis are used to re-classify the Costaceae based on phylogenic principles. The phylogenetic hypothesis is also used to draw conclusions about the evolution of floral development and the role of pollination syndrome in speciation and macroevolution. In order to investigate biogeographic patterns of diversification within the tropics, molecular sequence data is combined with fossil evidence for the order Zingiberales. These data date the origin of the order to approximately 120 million years ago with major lineage diversification taking place around 90 million years ago. The Costaceae, a member of the crown group of Zingiberales, begins to diversify approximately 65 million years ago, with rapid radiations leading to large clades in the Neotropics and in New Guinea. Combining the information about nodal ages with ancestral distribution information provides a means of developing a biogeographic hypothesis for the diversification of Costaceae and current patterns of distribution within the family.
