Humor is one of the most neglected aspects in the study of the wisdom traditions of the world, and yet my personal experience with reputable teachers of Siddha Yoga, Zen and Sufism revealed that humor is a mode commonly used to convey spiritual wisdom. My research on the ontological and epistemological aspects of spiritual humor, its incidence in ancient as well as modern teachings, coupled with interviews on the subject has confirmed to me that: (A) Each wisdom tradition regards spiritual humor positively and has left scores of textual records to demonstrate its importance. Humor is undoubtedly a viable didactical tool in the hands of a skillful spiritual teacher. (B) Humor can be a powerful catalyst of spiritual evolution in the individual: It implies finding pleasure in the incongruous and paradoxical, fundamental elements of mystical knowledge and it provokes the kind of opening necessary for spiritual transformation. (C) Humor is a natural consequence of true spiritual knowledge: the master is humorous because he/she has unshakable faith and limitless insight. The clarity and creativity intrinsic in the attainment of spiritual knowledge give both the cosmic as well as the comic vision. (D) Humor is an antidote for stringent religious views: it implies the acceptance of an alternative. Today more than ever has become necessary to find methods of reconciliation and dialogue between world religions. Humor may be one of the shared values we can use as common ground for dialogue.

In a field of study where the incongruous and the paradoxical are the rule rather than the exception, it should not surprise us that humor is not only an appropriate mode to impart valuable teachings but it is also the evidence of spiritual understanding in the adept and master alike.
