Nettleton, who was staunch Calvinist, was an influential evangelist during his days. Finney, an avid Arminian, also achieved a remarkable evangelistic impact. With concern for the different theological assumptions, this research attempts to examine their similarities and differences in philosophies of preaching, theology, and hermeneutics, and applications in evangelism. For this reason, the similarities, on the one hand, support the evidence that there were timeless principles of evangelism to share among preachers from different theological backgrounds. On the other hand, the differences suggest that there was diversity in efficient evangelistic efforts over different theological assumptions.

From a study of these two preachers, one can see that God uses people of both theological persuasions in the matter of predestination in evangelism. The discussion of this dissertation covers the following questions. What impact does theological views have upon evangelism? What influences do theological persuasions have? How do the societal attitudes of the people affect preaching? What lessons can be learned from the ministries of Nettleton and Finney that can be applied for modern ministry?

Chapter one provides a brief summary on the bibliographical influences of Nettleton and Finney. Chapter two explores the historical setting of the early nineteenth century. Chapter three probes each preacher's distinctive approaches by dividing them into two parts: one for Nettleton, the other for Finney. It discusses each preacher's theological perspectives, preaching philosophies, and methodologies. This chapter synthesizes the observations given from chapters one and two. Chapter four compares their similarities and unique characteristics. The final chapter offers applications for contemporary evangelistic preaching. This chapter, first, defines the four concepts representing today's culture, which involves skepticism, relativism, pluralism, and sensibility. Second, it establishes theological foundations, discusses various methodologies that possibly could be used by evangelistic preachers in this postmodern age, and offers suggestions for effective preaching methodologies for today. The conclusion summarizes the observations acquired throughout this research. It also offers encouragement to the modern preacher to give attention to the theological aspects, appropriate evangelistic preaching methodologies, hermeneutics, and application in evangelistic preaching.
