Thesis (Ph.D.)--Saint Louis University, 1990.
This dissertation is an investigation of the changes in the theology and practice of preaching in the Roman Catholic Church in the United States in the period 1935 to 1983. The period studied begins and ends with official Catholic Documents which make explicit reference to preaching. The methodology employed has involved the examination of official Church teaching (papal, conciliar, synodal, and episcopal), the work of principal theorists (including dissertations on homiletics), influential preachers and movements, and a survey of ecclesiastical journals of the period. The study concludes that there has been a gap between official teaching on preaching and its actual practice. The Church's teaching on liturgical preaching, especially that of Vatican Council II, has stressed that the homily is an essential part of the whole Eucharistic celebration. Preaching, as it has been practiced, has not always received the emphasis official teaching has called for. Two of the salient reasons for the gap have been the lack of consistent teaching of preaching in seminaries and the failure of the bishops, as 'chief preachers in the Church,' to provide models of good preaching for the clergy.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Chapter one first examines the concept and nature of liturgical preaching. It then provides a survey of the history of preaching to contextualize the preaching of the American Church within its broader ecclesial setting. This survey takes the reader to 1935.

Chapters two, three, and four, following the methodology laid out above, survey the three time periods which make up the study--1935-1961, 1962-1974, and 1975-1983.

Chapter five contains the conclusions drawn from the study. The chapter includes comments by scholars and practitioners in the field of preaching on the perceived change, or lack of it, in the status of preaching in the Catholic Church in America. Some suggestions are made to assist in narrowing the gap between official teaching and ongoing practice.
