This study examines Charles G. Finney's concept of holiness and the role of the Holy Spirit in its production. Special attention is paid to the question of human ability. Finney has commonly been viewed as having advocated an anthropocentric theology with Pelagian overtones. More recently it has been argued that his doctrine of sanctification in general, and his notion of the baptism of the Holy Spirit in particular, led him to modify an earlier Pelagian stance and grant a more vital role to the Spirit. These two approaches have tended to result in a polarization of views; Finney is either regarded as a Pelagian advocate of human ability, or as a pre-Pentecostal theologian of the Spirit.Subjects--Topical Terms:

By paying close attention not only to the theological context of Finney's writings, but to the development of his doctrine of holiness over a period of years as well, a balanced picture of his theology emerges. Distinct phases of development are noted in Finney's understanding of entire sanctification and the changing role of the Holy Spirit. Unchanged, however, is his life-long commitment to a moral philosophy which espouses the absolute freedom of the human will. Finney built his doctrines of sin, atonement, regeneration, and sanctification upon a philosophical foundation that limits moral obligation to the voluntary ultimate intention of the human will. When added to his concept of moral simplicity, this means that moral obligation cannot transcend natural ability, nor can moral character be mixed.

It is found that in the development of his doctrine of entire sanctification, Finney did correct an earlier overemphasis on human ability. He even began to describe holiness in terms and phrases which imply the necessity of divine empowering and cleansing. However, because he never modified his moral philosophy, he was compelled to define sanctification simply as the entire consecration of the human will. It is therefore concluded that because of this insistence on the independence and vitality of the human will, he was never able to find a convincing place for divine enablement. For this reason, inner unresolved tensions remain in Finney's system that justify the charges of his critics.
