The German Lutheran pastor Wilhelm Lohe was among those in the 19th century who, in reaction to the disintegrating effects of pietism and rationalism upon church life and in the midst of social and political upheaval, attempted to recover and restore historic forms of Christian worship in order to establish the church as an effective community in the modern world. Lohe's liturgical work stands alongside other activities that engaged him in the struggle to define the character of contemporary church life. These include his contribution to the rise of Lutheran confessionalism, the founding of a mission school to train pastors and teachers for German immigrant communities in North America, and the establishment of an order of deaconesses.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The German Lutheran pastor Wilhelm Lohe was among those in the 19th century who, in reaction to the disintegrating effects of pietism and rationalism upon church life and in the midst of social and political upheaval, attempted to recover and restore historic forms of Christian worship in order to establish the church as an effective community in the modern world. Lohe's liturgical work stands alongside other activities that engaged him in the struggle to define the character of contemporary church life. These include his contribution to the rise of Lutheran confessionalism, the founding of a mission school to train pastors and teachers for German immigrant communities in North America, and the establishment of an order of deaconesses.

The principal liturgical means that Lohe employed to promote the renewal of church life was the celebration of the Lord's Supper (Abendmahl) and the preparation for it through a registration procedure called the announcement (Anmeldung) and by confession (Beichte). The weekday announcement, the Saturday confession, and the Sunday celebration of the Lord's Supper formed a recurring structure within the life of the rural parish that Lohe served.

This study examines this liturgical structure and its parts. On the evidence of the available primary sources, announcement, confession, and Lord's Supper as practiced at Neuendettelsau during the course of Lohe's ministry are reconstructed in detail. In each case, Lohe's initiatives are considered: the use of the announcement for the purposes of church discipline, the restoration of private confession, and the more frequent celebration of the Lord's Supper together with its integration into the principal service, reshaped according to historic models.

The study also offers an ecclesiological interpretation of this liturgical structure. From the perspective of Lohe's own thought, the Lord's Supper was the supreme manifestation of the church as a visible community. It was principally an act of communion, the church with Christ and its members with one another. The announcement, as an act of church discipline, defined the ecclesial community by setting boundaries of faith and life, and confession, as an act of repentance and forgiveness, established it in the holiness of God's grace.
