The purpose of the dissertation was to analyze the development of innovative preaching in America during the period of time from 1960 to 1980. From an analysis of the characteristics of both traditional and innovative preaching conclusions were drawn concerning a proper definition of innovative preaching. Various movements during this time period were examined to determine the factors which caused this new type of preaching. The wide variety of innovative forms were examined to provide a basic understanding of these forms. The implications for the use of innovative preaching in the local church were drawn.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a After the introduction of the study, Chapter I, was a comparative analysis of the different characteristics of traditional and innovative preaching in order to formulate a definition of innovative preaching. The basic content of a biblical sermon was examined first. The form and structure of traditional and innovative preaching were the main focus of the chapter.
520 $a In Chapter II an analysis was made of select causes which brought about the phenomenon called innovative preaching. It included a study of such factors as post World War II America, the turbulent 1960s with its decline in church membership, and the rejection of authority. There was a study of the changing role of the preacher through the growth of electronic media, and the advent of modern communication theories. All of these elements and more were examined to determine the causative factors which brought about innovating preaching.
520 $a Chapter III contained an examination of the various types of innovative sermons such as dialogue sermons, dramatic art sermons, multimedia sermons, and innovative worship sermans. The analysis was focused upon the origin and development of the various innovative sermons. Ideas regarding the preparation and delivery of innovative sermons were also explored. A brief analysis of the different innovative forms was completed for the purpose of providing actual examples of innovative sermons.
520 $a In the Conclusion, the value of innovative preaching within a planned program of preaching by the local minister was examined. Practical applications of the research findings to the ministry of preaching in the local church were also summarized.
