American clergymen played a significant role in the events and issues which culminated in the Civil War. This dramatic function has been researched with special emphasis devoted to four famous northern preachers: Theodore Parker, Charles G. The four preachers have been compared and contrasted with each other and with their counterparts in the North and South. Special attention has been devoted to their use of the pulpit as a means of addressing public issues which divided the American people.
520 $a A final chapter provides an analysis of nineteenth century sermons. A guide has been developed to aid in the analysis of sermons. This guide was applied to four sermons, one from each of the four pulpit giants.
