Purpose. It is hypothesized that recruitment of type IIb fibers leads to lactic acid accumulation. The recruitment hypothesis implies an increase of blood lactate concentration by increasing both activation and firing frequency of type IIb MUs. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify changes in the integrated EMG and EMG power spectrum that may signify a transition from type IIa to IIb recruitment. Results. Significant EMG changes were observed at lactate levels of greater than onset of blood lactate accumulation for integrated EMG for the distal channel, 0--50Hz for the distal channel, and 50--100Hz for the proximal and distal channels. No observable trends were found for mean power frequency or median power frequency for either channel. No significant differences were found among fitness levels. Conclusions. Results of the present investigation have implications that the recruitment of type IIb muscle fibers can be observed at onset of blood lactate accumulation using surface EMG analysis.
