Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Utah, 2004.
In study 1, untrained females performed an initial bout (IB) of eccentric repetitions at short (S; 0--80°) or long (L; 50--130°) muscle length for the elbow extensors (n = 9 per group). Both groups performed a repeated bout (RB) 1-wk later at 0--130°. Extensor torque decrement and delayed onset muscle soreness were attenuated 2-d following the RB for L, whereas the opposite occurred for S. Thus, a RB effect (RBE) occurred for L, but not S. Optimal torque shifted to angles favoring torque production at longer lengths for L but not S following the IB. A measure of angle-torque curve was identified as a strong mediator (r 2 = .71) for the RBE. In study 2, seven males and seven females of varied maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max)(range: 30 to 75 mL*kg -1*min-1) completed 6-min cycling bouts at power outputs corresponding to ventilatory threshold (WVT), 0.15 (power output at VO2max; Wpeak - WVT ) + WVT (15% above), and 0.30 (Wpeak - W VT) + WVT (30% above). VO2 slow component (change from 3- to 6-min; DeltaVO2 6-3)(mL*min-1) for WVT, 15% above, and 30% above were 229 +/- 104, 282 +/- 135, and 312 +/- 126 (mean +/- SD) (P > 0.05), respectively. Correlation coefficients between VO2VT and DeltaVO 2 6-3 for WVT, 15% above, and 30% above were .80, .81, and .81, respectively. Corresponding values for VO2max and DeltaVO 2 6-3 were .70, .72, and .72, respectively. These data indicate the VO2 slow component during heavy exercise relates more strongly to VO2VT than VO2max. In study 3, validity of the heart rate reserve-VO2 reserve (HRR-VO2R) model for estimating VO2 was compared with a new dual-component model generating HR and VO2 reserves < and > VT (HRR-VT R) using Study 2 data and three additional bouts at varied intensities. Bland-Altman plots indicated agreement between actual VO2 and estimated VO2 was stronger for the HRR-VTR model vs. the HRR-VO2R model for all exercise intensities examined and that level of fitness had no systematic effect on the validity of either estimate. These results also indicate that the VO2 slow component during short-term heavy exercise can be validly estimated using the HR R-VTR model.
