The continuous blood pressure response to weight lifting has not been investigated using arterial tonometry or at varying cadences. The goal of this study was to evaluate the blood pressure and heart rate response to weight lifting at different contraction rates using arterial tonometry.

The continuous blood pressure response to weight lifting has not been investigated using arterial tonometry or at varying cadences. The goal of this study was to evaluate the blood pressure and heart rate response to weight lifting at different contraction rates using arterial tonometry.

The 12-Repetition Maximum (12-RM) for the angled leg press was determined for each subject (N = 16). Systolic (SBP), diastolic (DBP), mean arterial (MAP) blood pressure and heart rate (HR) responses to three sets of 10 repetitions at slow (six seconds per repetition) and fast (two seconds per repetition) contraction rates were evaluated, resulting in six total sets.

A three-factor repeated-measures analysis of variance (RM-ANOVA) was applied to SBP, DBP and MAP to evaluate repetitions and sets at both rates for peaks and nadirs in the pressure profile. This was also performed for HR at both rates across repetitions and sets, along with a two-factor model for HR across repetitions and sets at either rate. After Bonferroni adjustment, statistical significance was accepted at p < 0.017.

At the slow rate, peak SBP was 182.3 +/- 35.1 (set 1), 176.2 +/- 39.1 (set 2) and 181.8 +/- 44.9 (set 3) mmHg. Peak SBP at the fast rate was 170.4 +/- 23.5 (set 1), 181.2 36.6 (set 2) and 180.5 +/- 39.2 (set 3) mmHg. For the slow rate, peak HR was 112.8 +/- 12.2 (set 1), 115.6 +/- 13.9 (set 2) and 119.1 +/- 17.1 (set 3) beats/minute. Peak HR at the fast rate was 118.0 +/- 10.5 (set 1), 116.0 +/- 10.1 (set 2) and 116.8 +/- 10.2 (set 3) beats/minute.

Significant findings were (a) SBP, DBP, MAP and HR increase across repetitions but not sets at either rate, (b) all peak pressures increase similarly across repetitions and sets at both rates, (c) no significant change in peak-nadir differences is observed at either rate across repetitions and sets and (d) HR increases differently across repetitions and sets at slow versus fast rates. Thus, the contraction rate of weight lifting has no significant influence on acute blood pressure, though it exerts some effect on heart rate.
